7 Hot Wedding Trends for 2015 - transcending "rustic" in favor of "chic"

Today I'm happy to welcome Laura Michonski of NewYork.com to my wedding blog with her Top 7 picks of the Hottest Wedding Trends for 2015. While she focused on the trends in the NYC area - I'm seeing these trends across the US so no worries if you are outside the NYC area. Please leave me a comment as I would love to know what your favorite wedding trend is.

>>> 1. The DIY Wedding <<<

The DIY wedding has become very popular in the past couple of years in NYC. By “DIY” I don’t mean that the bride and groom are doing absolutely everything themselves in terms of pulling together the wedding, but that they’re taking over or assigning to their friends elements that were traditionally reserved for specialists. For example, you see many couples these days creating their own playlists on iPods, going down to the flower district and doing their own flowers and giving out handmade gifts as favors (baked cookies for example). I attribute this trend to a couple of things: the first is that New York City is one of the most expensive places in the country to get married (you can expect costs here to be roughly triple what they would be anywhere else in the country), and tackling some of the most expensive elements (flowers) is a great way to cut down on costs. The “rustic” wedding trend has been going strong for several years now and this is a takeoff on that idea – it has become “cool” to DIY your wedding. It allows couples to tap into the “local” trend, too – by doing everything yourself, you’re keeping things local.

>>> 2. Return to Old-World Glamour <<<

The rustic chic trend has been going strong for several years now and in the past year or two the trend has started to transcend the “rustic” in favor of the “chic.” Instead of Edison lightbulbs, for example, brides are starting to incorporate chandeliers into their barn weddings. There is also a movement toward all-out glamour as a backlash to this movement. Brides are starting to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of burlap bag and mason jar weddings and are longing for something more classy and glamorous. Not that all brides aspire to be Kim Kardashian, but she certainly set a tone with her Versailles reception on May 24, 2014.

>>> 3. Green <<<

Rustic, glamorous, DIY or otherwise, one trend that seems to be consistent is the use of greenery in décor. Brides are opting to incorporate greenery in all of its form – tree branches, moss, plants –  to add flourish to their big day. I’ve even seen a couple go as far as trying to recreate Central Park in the Plaza Hotel with box hedges and trees!

>>> 4. One wedding, two parties <<<

The idea of getting married and throwing one huge reception is changing, especially as prices for that reception continue to rise (2014 saw the highest wedding costs yet, with the average wedding costing $31,213; in Manhattan, the average wedding costs $76,328). Some couples are opting to throw two or even three parties – one small, intimate party right after the ceremony for their closest friends and family and then a huge low-key bash for all of their friends – this bash can be as simple as a picnic in the park or a shindig thrown in their apartment. It’s a great way to ensure that costs don’t get in the way of celebrating with everyone that you love. I’ve seen the third party come in when the bride and groom are both from different, distant cities and want to celebrate with relatives and friends but can’t see everyone they care about making the trip. In that case, they’ll do the wedding and a small party and then two shindigs, one in each of their hometowns.

>>> 5. Multi-course dinners that guests can enjoy <<<

It used to be that the cocktail hour was the highlight of the wedding and few guests left the dance floor long enough to focus on the actual meal (in part because couples wanted to maximize the party, and in part because everyone was stuffed to the gills from the cocktail hour). Some couples have embraced this with cocktail-and-hors-d’oeuvres-only affairs but I’m hearing about more and more couples who are going the OPPOSITE way and opting for lighter cocktail hours in favor of a multi-course dinner that guests can actually sit down and enjoy – and then dancing. This also allows the couple to personalize the menu more with favorite childhood comfort foods, meals from first dates, etc.

>>> 6. Two (sometimes three) wedding dresses <<<

As more couples from different backgrounds wed, we see a desire to bring in elements from both cultures. This often results in brides changing from a traditional white wedding gown into a wedding gown that nods to her (or her groom’s) culture. But even brides from the same cultures as their grooms are choosing two wedding dresses – one that is more classic and geared toward the ceremony, and one that is shorter and trendier and designed for dancing.

>>> 7. A move away from traditional elements <<<

Gone are the days of the bouquet toss, the garter toss, and the family announcements. And fast upon their heels is the idea of selecting one gown for all bridesmaids (in fact, some couples are doing away with the bridal party altogether!). Some couples are even eschewing the ceremony in favor of focusing on the party. In part, this is due to the fact that more and more couples are delaying marriage until later in their careers and footing at least part of the bill themselves (on average, couples now pay for 43% of the wedding themselves). At this stage in the game, these couples know what they want and they don’t have the same pressure from their parents since they’re sharing the burden of the costs.

Top 5 of the Hottest Wedding Trends for 2015 - by Renowned Event Planner

A new year means there are new trends in fashion, food and . . . of course, weddings. Engagement season is between Christmas and the end of February so that's means there are a lot of new couples starting to make their wedding plans. Since wedding day plans should include some of the hottest trends, Cynthia Pesce {event planner and general manager at the award-winning Inn at New Hyde Park in Long Island, New York} joins us today with her top five 2015 weddings trends.

1. Late-night Dining

This is a trend that started to gain traction in 2014. In 2015, we think a much larger portion of weddings will feature mid night or post reception snacks. After a night of dancing and cocktails, what better than a few comfort or mini foods before your guests head home. A few examples include: sliders, bacon items, assortments of grilled cheeses and more. Also look for infused alcohol in desserts. YUM!

2. Earthy Color Schemes

Look for more browns, tans, warm grays, and greens as weddings will have more of an earthy feel to them. Many earth tones originate from clay earth pigments, such as umber, ochre, and sienna.

3. Rustic Remains Popular

Look for more greenery garden like floral arrangements as brides and grooms focus on a natural clean appeal.

4. Simple Floral Centerpieces

The floral centerpieces will be simpler and less structured. You can also say goodbye to lush colors. We will also see less florals that are in the shape of a ball, as the flowers will be staged together more naturally.

5. Wedding Dresses : New and Old Favorites

Like any fashion industry, each year brings new styles or brings back old favorites. In 2015 brides are looking at more peekaboo lace, dresses with capped sleeves, and ruffled textured dresses {like this one from BHLDN}.

Top Wedding Trends for 2014 ... direct from the Martha Stewart's Wedding Party in NYC

Happy Thursday! I have a special treat for you today. This past Sunday {Jan 26th}, one of the first major New York City-area wedding events of 2014 took place at Gotham Hall. The Wedding Library hosted Martha Stewart's Wedding Party and my go-to girl from Brooklyn, Jackie, was there to take photos and mingle with the celebs of the industry. Today she's here to share all the hot wedding trends for 2014 that she saw and heard about with YOU! So, I now turn the blog over to Jackie . . .

The Martha Stewart's Wedding Party event was kicked off by an all-star panel of wedding industry experts that included: Darcy Miller : Editorial Director at Martha Stewart Weddings, Amsale Aberra : Dress Designer, Preston Bailey : Event Designer, Marcy Blum : Eventiste, Peter Callahan : Caterer, Sylvia Weinstock : Cake Designer, and Kellee Khalil : Lover.ly

Darcy began by giving a presentation highlighting some of her favorite unique details from recent celebrity and real weddings, including her own! Some of the highlights included a large menu custom-printed on fabric from Kate Bosworth's recent wedding to a re-imagined bridal bouquet made out of tiny wildflowers to new takes on the rustic wedding.

The celebrity panel then offered brides-to-be
several tips for planning a memorable wedding:

Tip 1. Brides and grooms are encouraged to hire the best vendors they can; Peter Callahan stressed the importance of working with professionals and once vendors are hired, trust them to do their jobs - they have lots of great experience.

Tip 2. In 2014, there are no rules for weddings! Brides are encouraged to think and plan outside the box. Darcy Miller and Kellee Khalil both shared that only traditions relevant and meaningful to the couple need sticking to, but even certain traditions can be re-invented for today's weddings. Everything from food to decor to wedding vows can be as creative and unique as the couple wishes.

Tip 3. Panel participants noted that increasing personalization of wedding details is a big trend. Brides and grooms - and the vendors they choose - are focusing more on details that reflect the couple's individual interests, families, cultures, etc, as well as meaningful experiences from their lives together to incorporate into the wedding.

Tip 4. The guest experience is growing more important to brides and grooms. Couples are now considering not just what would make them happy, but what their guests might enjoy as well. Everything from comfort food and wine pairings to little extras for guests - like printing ceremony programs on fans for guests attending an outdoor ceremony in hot weather - ensures everyone will have an enjoyable time.

Tip 5. Marcy Blum emphasized the importance of enjoying the process. Acknowledging that wedding planning can be stressful, it's also important to take advantage of such a magical time in your life and the happiness you're inspiring among those close to you.

Tip 6. Everyone on the panel concluded by agreeing that the most important aspect of the wedding is the people getting married. No matter how much planning there is, no matter how beautiful the details, at the end of the day, it's the marriage that matters most.

Over 100 vendors were represented, offering engaged couples everything from photo booth rental services to hair and make-up services to registry assistance.

Many of the vendors showcased some of the
new and exciting wedding trends out there:

Trend 1: Ultra-creative cakes, both in design and ingredients, including a wedding cake made out of rice krispie treats! Talk about personalization and crowd-pleasing!

Trend 2: Rustic wedding details are still popular, from burlap table linens, birds' nests and tree branch table number holders

Trend 3: Couples don't have to register for traditional china - patterns are more modern, whimsical, and unique than ever

Trend 4: Floral arrangements still remain popular ways for couples to decorate and express their personal style; arrangements ranged from tall, textured and elegant to full, single-flower, bold-colored centerpieces.

Trend 5: Table linens and rental furniture also make bolder statements with bold colors and patterns.

Trend 6: Gowns and bridal accessories still feature traditional fabrics like lace, but bling seems supreme. Vintage Hollywood styles appeared in both gowns and accessories. Even the classic, vintage NYC taxi is still a favorite for the getaway car!

Trend 7: Personalized wedding favors take a twist as dual-purpose gifts for guests: a personalized inflatable beach ball is a great way to commemorate your special day and keep guests entertained for a beach or warm-weather destination wedding.

Wedding flower trends are constantly evolving into new and beautiful design ideas. Colors, flower varieties and designs for bouquets, arrangements, centerpieces and wedding decor will vary according to the wedding theme and colors . . . from simple and elegant, to eco-chic, to rustic and glamorous. Going into 2014 we see some similar variety in trends when compared to what we have seen this year. This will include tons of color along with blush, pinks, champagne and whites, accented by stylish touches. All of this will fit a more personalized, unique and one-of-a-kind look to complement each bride.

Here are a few of our favorite bouquets and flowers. You will also be able to see how the colors and themes create new trends which will continue into the new year . . .

Number 1: Romantic Looks and Delicate Colors

If you are looking for a vintage heirloom look with a sweet romantic flair . . . add garden roses, ranunculus and peonies to your wedding flowers. Peonies in blush pinks, white and reds make gorgeous bouquets and add a fabulous addition to your wedding centerpieces. They make a statement by themselves or when grouped with other wedding flowers. To supplement these fabulous blooms, consider adding in lisianthus, stock, scabiosa flowers (available in purple, burgundy, white and pink) and sweet peas. They will create a bouquet that is delicate and delightfully scented. Spray roses are always available and you can get them in a variety of colors throughout the year. They offer a great complement to shabby chic wedding decor.

Number 2: Bold, Beautiful and Modern

Touches of color can be achieved with hints of ranunculus, poppy flowers, dahlias, freesias and anemones.
 • Ranunculus come in a variety of pinks, purples, orange and white.
 • Add anemones to the mix for a bloom that is cheerful and complements a sophisticated design with clean lines and an urban look.
 • Dahlias, perfect for summer and fall weddings, come in delicious pinks, oranges and purples. Burgundy Dahlias are perfect for the fall season, and the much sought-after Cafe au Lait Dahlia is the most perfect and inspiring bloom for a blush bouquet.
 • Freesias were a hit in 2013 and we hope they continue in 2014, as they not only bring a delicate scent as an accent flower, but they also add a splash of color to your wedding day with purple, bright yellow, red, hot pink and white.

Number 3: Eco Chic and Organic Looks

A wonderful variety of plants and flowers can be added to create a wedding bouquet that boasts a fresh look and an eco-friendly design. Include succulents, air plants, proteas, berries, scabiosa pods, clemantis and helleborus for a design that is both exciting and truly unique. In the fall, you can add celosia (cockcomb) in gem colors for additional texture to your bouquets.

Number 4: Exciting new color ideas

The color predictions for 2014 include a variety of blues in all shades. Numerous flowers including delphinium, agapanthus and nigella flowers add fabulous blue accents to wedding flowers. It's a look that fits with a country chic, rustic and vineyard wedding design. Anemones also come in a decadent blue purple which is the perfect complement for a winter wedding or a bohemian chic design.
